Reveals the systems and services that sustains cities, applying this knowledge through designing to future urban and regional scenarios.
Cities research at RMIT produces particular design expertise and methodologies for effecting change in the urban realm. With an explicit focus on spatial and material conditions, and their impact on the use, occupation and qualities of the city, the work engages a range of disciplines and data sets. Testing and critiquing policy, envisaging alternative value propositions, reordering spatio-economic limits or revealing latent systems and effects are possible outcomes of this work. A deep understanding of the spaces and mechanics of the city, and creative consideration of future possibilities for urbanisation is the larger aim. This work articulates directly to the core of the d___Lab’s paradigm – design practice research and evidencing meta-research through specific and applied study, i.e. singular case-studies.
