Australian Packaging Covenant sustainable packaging guidelines

This is one of the schedules to the Australian Packaging Covenant, for the National Packaging Covenant Council.

In late 2010 the Sustainable Products and Packaging team at the Centre for Design and Dr Helen Lewis (Adjunct Professor) completed a review of the new Sustainable Packaging Guidelines, one of the schedules to the Australian Packaging Covenant, for the National Packaging Covenant Council. Workshops were held with five companies – Swisse Vitamins, SuperCheap Auto, Patties Foods, Fosters Group and Nike Australia. The workshops focused upon working through the guidelines with a nominated packaging system involving a multi-disciplinary team of persons from packaging technology, production, logistics, marketing and packaging suppliers in each company. Case studies were written describing the process by which each company worked through the guidelines with recommendations on areas for improvement. One of the recommendations of the study, to extend the time available for companies to submit their 5-year Action Plans from December 2010 to March 2011 has been implemented by the Covenant Council.
