The Guesthouse Project: Refugees, Migration and Inclusive Communities through Design

In September Dr. Caroline Vains from RMIT’s Interior Design (hons) program in the School of Architecture and Design brought Christof Mayer to Melbourne from Berlin to lead a two-week design and construct intensive with a group of Interior Design (hons) students. Christof is a founding member of from internationally acclaimed, Berlin-based architecture collective raumlaborberlin The aim was to build a temporary pop-up structure that acted as a stage for cross-cultural engagement and a catalyst for social inclusion – a guesthouse. It was a practice-led investigation into how design might be leveraged to generate social cohesion at the local scale. It was built on the grounds of an old primary school in Melbourne’s inner city suburb of Brunswick.

The Guesthouse pop-up was the focal point for a series of events that together comprised ‘The Guesthouse Project: Refugees, Migration and Inclusive Communities through Design’. The events included a public lecture by Christof Mayer from raumlaborberlin at the Design Hub, the Guesthouse opening with Christof Mayer and the community day and party, both at Siteworks in Brunswick.

The Guesthouse Project was proudly supported by the Goethe-Institut, The Michael Boltman Trust, GHG Home and Building Recycling, RMIT Interior Design (hons) program, RMIT School of Architecture and Design through the SRC funding, VICSEG (the Victorian Cooperative on Children’s Services for Ethnic Groups)New Futures, and the Moreland City Council Celebrating Place initiative.
